What is MCI?

The Medical Council of India was Formed in 1934 under the Indian Medical Council. The main function was to, established the uniform standard of higher qualification in medicine and recognition of medical qualification in India as well as all over the world.

But after Independence, there was a steady increase in the  Medical Colleges and it was felt that provisions of the Indian Medical Council Act were not adequate to meet with the challenges posed by the very fast development and the progress in medical education in the country.

Objective

• Maintain the Uniform Standards of the Medical Education, both undergraduates and postgraduates.
• Permanent/Provisional Registration of doctors with recognized medical qualifications.
• Recommendation for recognition/de-recognition of medical qualifications of medical institutions of India or foreign countries.
• Reciprocity with foreign countries in the matter of mutual recognition of medical qualifications.

Updates in Rules and Regulation

"The Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2019 was approved at a Cabinet meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to replace the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Second Ordinance through an act of Parliament.

The bill will be introduced in the upcoming session of Parliament.

The move will ensure transparency, accountability, and quality in the governance of medical education in the country, an official statement said.

"Subsequently, a replacement bill of the said ordinance namely, the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2018 was introduced in the Lok Sabha on December 14, 2018 and passed on December 31Â by the House," the statement stated." The Times Of India
